How To Avoid AI Generated Embroidery Patterns And Shop With Confidence

Embroidery is all about creativity, care, and the joy of making something truly special with your own hands. But lately, I’ve noticed a growing concern in embroidery groups: the rise of AI-generated patterns. While AI can be useful in many areas (I even use it to help with parts of my business!), it doesn’t always translate well when it comes to designing embroidery patterns.

Many stitchers have shared their disappointment after purchasing designs that turned out to be AI-generated. Often, the result is a pattern that looks pretty in the listing but is impossible to replicate in real life. If you’ve ever ordered something that didn’t match your expectations, you’ll know how disheartening that can feel.

The good news? With a little know-how, you can spot the signs of a quality pattern or kit—and avoid the frustrations of AI-generated designs. Here are my top tips for shopping with confidence:

Read The Listing Description Carefully

Check what’s actually included with your purchase. Are there clear instructions? A stitch guide? Or just an image? If the listing doesn’t specify, be prepared to create your own version of the design—especially if the pattern is AI-generated and hasn’t been tested in real stitching.

Look Closely At The Listing Images

Does the seller show progress photos or videos of the design being stitched? This is a great sign that they’ve tested and refined the design themselves. AI images often look “too perfect” or show stitches that aren’t possible in real life.

The eyes on the lion image above would be nearly impossible to create using standard embroidery threads and stitches and the whiskers are clearly just thin whote lines added to the picture.

Take a really close look at the fabric background. On AI generated images there is likely to be some strange areas on the woven fabric.

Explore The Seller’s Other Products

A genuine designer usually has a consistent style or theme across their work. If a shop feels like a random mix of designs without any connection, that can be a red flag.

Read The Reviews

Reviews are gold when it comes to spotting reliable sellers. Look for feedback that mentions clear instructions, easy-to-follow patterns, and a satisfying final result.

Check Their Social Media

Behind-the-scenes content, design inspiration, and progress shots all point to a real, passionate maker. If you can see how they bring their creations to life, it’s a strong sign you’re supporting a true artist.

Consider The Price

If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Super-low prices, massive bundles, or endless discounts can suggest low-quality or AI-generated designs. Remember—quality and originality are worth paying a little more for.

Think About Where You’re Buying From

Etsy and Amazon can be fantastic marketplaces (I use Etsy myself for many sales!), but they’ve also seen an influx of mass-produced or AI designs. Buying directly from an independent small business can often give you more reliability and peace of mind.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask!

If you’re unsure, send the seller a quick message before buying. A genuine creator will usually be happy to answer your questions and reassure you about their process.

Avoid AI Generated Embroidery Patterns And Celebrate Real Creativity

Embroidery is special because it’s handmade, thoughtful, and unique. By supporting real designers, you’re not just buying a pattern—you’re celebrating the artistry, passion, and imagination that make stitching such a joy.
